Tuesday Morning Roundup: Latest Social Headlines (Nov 20th 2012)Posted 20 November 2012 by Aynsley Van Der Merwe
There is a rumour circulating the cyber world that Marissa Mayer, Yahoo!’s chief executive, has been in discussions with Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, about the possibility of them working together.
This would not be a first, as they have previously collaborated on a number of smaller projects, like Yahoo! news showing up on Facebook. They have even agreed to settle some long-standing patent lawsuits.
According to this article by the Telegraph, board members are expecting talks to lead to a stronger partnership based around web search.
Meanwhile, according to this article by All Things SD, Yahoo and Facebook are NOT in search alliance discussions. In fact, it calls the Telegraphs article as “thinner than tissue paper”. Yahoo! is apparently nowhere near cutting its ties with Microsoft. There is a long-term contract in place and Yahoo! would have difficulty extricating itself. Sources say Microsoft would fight that one anyway.
On the other hand, maybe Yahoo!, Facebook and Microsoft are going to form an alliance and take on Google, who knows? Mark Zuckerberg has already stated publicly that Facebook plans to enter the search arena, and now Yahoo! and Facebook are friends.
Coincidence? What do you think?
